Blue Bay Cottage and The Carriage House welcome you to an area with a history as
interesting as its natural setting is beautiful. They are located in the historic "Taft" neighborhood, at
the south end of Lincoln City. According to the local Historical Society, homesteaders began arriving in
the area that is now Lincoln City in about 1887. Because of its location on the Siletz Bay and Siletz River,
the area where Blue Bay Cottage and The Carriage House are located became the first center of North Lincoln
County's social and economic life. The first store was opened in what was then a separate town called "Taft,"
with the post office being opened in the store on January 22, 1906. The store owner and first postmaster was
John W. Bones. He named the town for William Howard Taft, who was, at that time, Secretary of War, and who
later became president. What if he had named it after himself? You could be staying in "Bones."
Good choice, John!
Taft was one of five small towns along this stretch of coast, each with its own government, services, and
personality. Finally, on March 3, 1965, after several failed attempts, the five cities (Taft, Cutler City,
Nelscott, Delake, and Oceanlake) incorporated as one city. But they could not agree on which city's name
to give the new municipality. So they had a contest, and the name Lincoln City, submitted by school
children, was selected. Long time residents still refer to the various neighborhoods to describe locations.
Lincoln City offers countless attractions and activities for every interest, from whale watching, beachcombing,
kite flying, tide pooling, gardens, Native American history sites, galleries and museums, glass blowing,
fishing, boating, music, concerts, live theater, wine tasting and wineries, shopping and an outlet mall-with
no sales tax!, casinos and gaming, and Lincoln City is a favorite for ocean side weddings and honeymoons.
(The first recorded honeymoon to the Lincoln City area was in 1837; there were two couples traveling
together, they traveled by horseback, pitched a tent, bathed in the surf-so-o-o cold, and stayed 8 days.
They must have gotten the weekly special.)
One interesting feature of which Lincoln City boasts is the "D" River. This is the world's shortest river.
According to the historical society, it has been known by various names in the past, including "the outlet"
(Is that where they got the idea for naming "The outlet mall"?-Never mind.) Anyway, they held another contest
to name the river, which is how the world's shortest river got the world's shortest name!
Blue Bay Cottage and The Carriage House put you right in the thick of all the fun. These "Almost Oceanfront"
properties are just a block off the water, and a short stroll to fine restaurants such as the well known "Mo's."
Just a block away is Rejuvenation Spa, the perfect place for a hot stone massage or facial, or.whatever you'd
like to refresh and relax you in mind and body.
These almost new vacation retreats are perfectly sited for your explorations and activities on the coast.
They are also decorated and furnished to fulfill your every need. Blue Bay Cottage sleeps six in luxurious
comfort, and The Carriage House will sleep up to four. Together, they make a perfect accommodation for
groups of up to ten persons. |
